Hi guys...
I know everyone out there has this first day cover of the "Empress of Ireland"...The only thing strange about this cover it is the only one I have that does not have a circular cancellation that we come to recognize on first day covers...There is a date when the ship went down, but to someone who is not familiar with stamps, they would not have an easy time dating this cover..(Other cover associated with the event, has a circular cancellation)

NO CIRCULAR CANCELLATION

OTHER FIRST DAY ASSOCIATED WITH EMPRESS
CIRCULAR CANCELLATION

wert,

not sure of your question, but it appears to me that both of the covers shown are identical. also, I am not familiar with Canadian postal policies, but most of the FDCs I collect (from Serbia, Croatia and that region) have special postmarks for the event.
the cover that you have pictured (both look the same to me) show the ship's wheel with information around it, including the date, 2014.05.29

Me too, Wert - right down to the small ink stain on the envelope to the lower right of the stamp. Did you maybe upload the same image twice?

Hmmm...

Maybe its time to clear out your browser cache?

Could be the webpage isn't loading properly, because I see two identical images with full cachet and ship's-wheel dated custom cancellations.

Aha! NOW they look different!

...but to me, they are both clearly cancelled on May 29th, 2014, just with a different cancellation design.

t isn't unusual for Canada Post to use a non-circular first day cancel.

I'm just guessing because I haven't looked closely at them but I'd say the FDC cancels for the past 30 years are for the most part unique to the issue. And they vary dramatically in design.
