Hi guys..Was looking at some of my "day of issue" covers and noticed this "Halifax Bicentennial" cover had....

1 - June 2d, 1949 cancellation
AND
2 - June 21st, 1949 cancellation

Does that make any sense..??
Could it be they missed a couple of stamps and they noticed it later but the date had changed..??

Now I took a measurement between all numerical and letters...They all measured 18 pixels between each other, so if that was the case and the June 2nd cancellation was june 23rd, it would appear between the red lines where the yellow arrow is pointing, and there is nothing there...see below.

June 21, 1949 is the correct first day of issue. I don't think there was an error in the original FDOI cancel, but rather the "1" in "21" was printed in the dark purple line to the right of your arrow, thus is gives the appearance of the day "2" instead of "21".

In any case, you might be interested in this link that was done on some of the many varieties of covers and postmarks used for this issue:

Thanks for that PDF wt1...You could be right, but strange they would use 2 different style cancellations on a "first day of issue" cover, don't you think..?

The top is a special FDC cancellation. The one at the bottom is a regular Halifax cancellation device to cancel the bottom two stamps. For a long time I ordered registered FDCs from Ottawa and most came this way as they had to cancel the extra postage.

I think the June 1 cancel was just under inked. Notice the M of AM is fading away, and it's just under where the 1 should be.
