Believe it or not, some Canadian stamps actually depict foreign soil.
I have counted 40 of them up to the year 2000 - but there may be more.
I wonder if you have noticed any of them?

If so, why not post them here - and see how many we can find.

Rules: (if I may)
1) Post one at a time, one per day, (unless pairs or blocks)
2) Brief explanation
3) No maps or globes (too many of them)

I'll go first with the first (I think): #215 (1935) George V Silver Jubilee

> A view of Windsor Castle in England

Built just after the conquest of 1066, it has been owned or inhabited by English royalty for almost a thousand years.

(The second one may be a bit tricky.)
See you in a day's time. Steve

Canada 486 Vimy Memorial.

Canadian WWI war memorial in Vimy, France.

(The second stamp may be for Colombo Plan # 394, but I couldn't resist showing the stamp above for upcoming November 11 Veteran's Day.)

Jogil, the land on which the Vimy Memorial is situated is Canadian soil. This piece of land was ceded to Canada by the people of France in perpetuity before the Memorial was built.

Here is a sneaky one. Scott 225 shows Niagara Falls with the Canadian falls in the background and the US falls in the foreground.

Off to an interesting start. Scottamer's choice reveals the subtlety that may be needed to ferret out more obscure issues.

Jogil's Vimy Ridge was a hidden snag, spotted by EasyOne. Although use of the land was granted in perpetuity from France, I think it is fair to say that it is, indeed, Canadian soil. To interrupt Rupert Brooke's poem, A Soldier:
"That there's some corner of a foreign field that is forever..." Canada!
Though no soldiers are buried there, it is soaked with Canadian blood. Lest We Forget.
(There is another similar but reversed snag ahead.)

Scottamer may be chagrined to find that his choice was the third, not second, example.
Here is the second: #216 [1935] George V Silver Jubilee:

According to Collections Canada Archive, the Royal Yacht Britannia, a favourite of King George V, was a sensation in the yachting world and won 231 first prizes and 129 others out of a total of 625 starts.
The Royal Yacht "Victoria & Albert" can be seen in the left background steaming away and that is the ship that would circumnavigate the globe, not the racing yacht which is seen here off the coast line of somewhere - England probably - but definitely not Canada!

Jogil snuck in the sixth: #394 [1961] The Colombo Plan

It shows a hydro-dam being built under supervision of Canadian engineers, probably in Pakistan, given the headdress of the man on the right.

I wonder what is the fourth?

PS. Don't forget to include a picture and a brief explanation. And one-a-day.

I would say that the Ram Tank stamps (Scott #258 and #259) certainly show the tank in combat, so it is safe to say that they must depict foreign soil in Europe.

So Sak, you got me on that Britannia stamp. I did not know that we should be "flyspecking" the boat stamps for hidden shores. A quick look at a copy of the Bluenose (Scott # 158) under high magnification revealed the following. Looks like I have found a new earliest foreign soil stamp!

Now Scottamer! I was just trying to provide a little respite from this blog's ubiquitous Wertian fly-specking. I did indeed see the coast line behind the Bluenose but one cannot know if it's home (Nova Scotia) or away (Massachusetts). The ship behind (losing!) is likely the American schooner Gertrude L. Thebaud who gave her a race for her money.
(I won't comment on your latest entry (ram tank) till tomorrow.)

To me, my image shows that it is clearly Windsor Castle, so I think it qualifies as foreign soil! All joking aside, I do not think there is any coastline on the Bluenose stamp except for my Photoshoped version.

Thanks for a fun thread.

According to historic research, the wall behind the head is from England, where Chalon painted his famous picture of Victoria. I am not sure you will all agree with me, but a wall background from a building in England qualities the same way the castle or the trees of the Windsor castle do. A matter of perspective isn't?
