Muruntau Gold Mine

The Muruntau gold deposit is situated in the Kyzyl Kum Desert of Uzbekistan. It is the world's largest open pit gold mine. The Muruntau Gold deposit was discovered in 1958, and production started in 1967.

The souvenir sheet shows the Western Deep Levels Mine.
The TauTona Mine, or Western Deep No.3 Shaft, is a gold mine in South Africa at a depth of 3.9 kilometers. It competes with the Mponeng gold mine, also in South Africa, for the world's deepest mining operations.
