Hi - Is anyone aware of a digital database for Scott Catalog values? I would think this could be a significant resource for dealers/collectors that simply want to check to see which stamps in their inventory have had significant price changes year to year. With all the talk of attracting younger collectors I think this type of digital system would be necessary. I would love to be able to have a searchable catalog on a tablet when I go to a stamp show. I have heard Scott attempted a DVD version of their catalog a few years ago but it was woefully inadequate.

I don't know if this will help. The Scott Catalog should be thought of as a report, not a database. Unfortunately, no relational database exists behind the Scott catalog, although some from Amos Press claims that a database exists. The pattern of errors in the catalog suggest that generating the catalog is still a manual process.

A comment from Chad Snee on a different message board suggests strongly that the process for generating the Scott Catalogue is a highly manual one, with Scott editors submitting their notes on paper (yes, paper). This was just within the past year, so I doubt there have been any dramatic changes since then. As much as many people would like to see a full-blown, searchable, relational database, I don't think one will be coming (at least from Amos) for quite some time, if ever.

Stamp Smarter is getting ready to release a US Plate Number Tool. It is based upon a full SQL relational database which has Scott numbers (used with permission and under contract). It does not allow anyone to download the Scott numbers or the database itself. But it is online and it is free to use. And while it contains a lot of the basic catalog information plus all known plate numbers for each stamp, it certainly does not contain any catalog values. Instead, it has links to ebay for each stamp that users can click on and determine market value.

It is fully searchable across all fields. There is also a 'filter-in-place' feature which auto-filters in real-time when you type something in the filter boxes.

For a seek peek at this tool, you can check it out here http://stampsmarter.com/pnt_landing.html

Note: this is still under development. It currently includes plate number for US regular and commemorative issues 1847 thru 2002 only.

Thanks everyone for your replies. As most of you point out, such a database is not forthcoming ... At least during my lifetime! I'll keep creating my own database. I did run across a person crating a database for all the stamps in the "big blue" Scott international albums. Great effort!

I can't imagine being a dealer with a large inventory and having to check what's gone up each year then change prices on all those 102 cards!
