Thailand Scott 655 - 657 are identified as being watermarked 233 in my Scott catalog. However, the watermark illustrations for Thailand do not include a #233. I have an example of the the 25 santangs Brown-Red stamp (Sc 655 that, while perf'ed correctly at 14 1/2, does not show any watermark. Can someone explain what the catalog editors meant when they id'ed this group of stamps as watermarked #233?

Thanks.

Don

DonSellos,

I am using a 2000 Scott Catalogue and was able to scan the attached entry that describes the Watermark 233. Sorry not a great scan but this may help.

Hobsun:

Thanks for the response. I have an older Scott catalog and in looking up the watermark number in the watermark index in the back of the volume I note that watermark 233 is listed for Panama and the Philippines, and that is the watermark you show in the scan.

Thailand, however, is not listed under 233 in my index. Is it in yours? I also checked to see if my stamp had the Harrison watermark and I just don't see it.

Unfortunately, I have only two stamps from this series, the 25 santangs and the 50 santangs. The 50s does not show a watermark either, at least I cannot see one. Might be just me.

Is your scan from one of the Thailand stamps, or from the Scott illustrations under Panama?

Does your 2000 catalog show watermark 233 in the Thailand watermark illustration section?

I guess it doesn't matter much as Thailand Scott 655-657 can be identified by their 14 1/2 perforation.

DonSellos,

My scan was from the front page of the Thailand section of the 2000 Scott Catalogue. As a side note, a search on ebay for Scott 655 under Thailand showed a set of stamps that were described as the Harrison and Sons set. (interesting tie with watermark description).

Really odd no watermark is present on the stamps. Maybe someone can help us. I will keep looking on this one just a puzzle for now. Unfortunately I do not have a copy of the those stamps in my collection for observation.

HObsun

I've got to get a newer catalog! It sounds as if Scott has put an illustration of watermark 233 in the Thailand section.

Watermark detection is not one of my stronger suits. However, it seems odd that with all of the letters in the Harrison watermark it would not be evident.

Still, as I said in my last post, I really don't need to see the watermark to identify the stamps in this three-stamp series. Perforations and color will suffice.

Thanks for your help.
