Recently got a batch of Norwegian stamps in the mail, and I sat down to sort them tonight. I think all those different post horns are going to drive me batty! I did finally get them all sorted, and I think it might even have been done accurately, mostly. Maybe. but what better thing to be doing on a cold and rainy night?
Although I am only casually familiar with Norway's Posthorn issues, I understand your pain. Between the US Washington/Franklin issues and the German Inflation era stamps, my eyes start to weigh heavy on me this time of year. But it is just as you stated - I wouldn't want to do anything else on a cold winter night!
Hello Rayn I'm collecting Norway and find it mostly amusing. Classical stamps are sometime difficult to identify. With my basic color gauge, identifying by the color is not accurate. Me it's Brazil that was my biggest challenge because some definitives where reissued 3 or 4 times with different watermarks. It's a lot of work to identify these stamps and they don't worth much. Enjoy the hobby. Daniel
Next I'm going to tackle the Netherlands, with their various numeral issues. The Netherlands and Norway are where my ancestors came from, so I'm interested in both countries. But I think the Netherlands have some of the most boring definitive stamps. Well, if I can complete my set of the doves with all their bright colors, it will make for a nice looking album page.
Gents, I'm probably replying a bit late on this thread. I still just wanted to say I am pleased to see that stamps from my homecountry can bring some joy or pain (probably both) on long winter nights!
On the bright side: presuming Scott is your reference, the struggle you're facing with the posthorns is not even 'the tip of the iceberg' as compared to using detailed Norwegian catalogues....Best of luck anyway! To be honest, I have not even started sorting them myself after I took up stamps again 12 years ago. Why not? The winter nights are simply not long enough for the posthorns, not even the winter in Norway.... Or it might have something to do with lack of determination.
Rayn - I agree with you on the Netherland definitives. However I think the existence of the 'syncopated' perforation saves the day for the Dutch. Personally I sorted through several hundreds only to find 3 copies with syncopated perfs. It gets close to boredom, however it feels quite rewarding when an empty space gets filled. How are you getting on with them?
