On a recent ebay win, the seller put this notice in place of the tracking number: "Sent1stClassMailon13withproofofmailing"

I was under the impression that ebay would only accept a tracking number if the item is lost in the mails. Am I incorrect in my assumption?

Proof of mailing is meaningless. Proof of DELIVERY is what is required.

I bet he's uploading bogus tracking numbers like that so he gets the Top Rated Seller discount (tracking numbers on 90% of shipments is one of the criteria). ebay probably does not validate the data entered into the tracking box, just that it is non-null. Basically, he's cheating the system.

I don't think using this gimmick will help the seller maintain TRS status because now ebay is using "Tracking uploaded within stated handling time and validated by carrier" as the criteria.

Using that tracking number entry will also leave them completely vulnerable if a buyer claims non-delivery.
