On ebay, navigate to the US Stamps 19th Century Used category and search the phrase "fancy cancel." The range of nondescript smudges, run-of-the-mill grid killers, even manuscript markings that are described as "fancy" is striking. I realize this is a marketing ploy, but it makes me chuckle nonetheless.

I had noted this as well dudley. There are thousands of plain old target killers that were used throughout the country that everyone says are now "fancy cancels". Generally a fancy cancel is a specially designed cancel that was usually used for a short period of time as a killer on stamps to mark them as used. Here is a fancy cancel of which only eight are known to exist from http://www.theswedishtiger.com/1861water.html |

Right, smauggie. It's not a completely precise term, but fancy cancels generally were artistically rendered designs or images used by individual post offices. The fact that they were usually carved into cork cancelers meant that they had relatively short life spans. |

Any online source of cataloged fancy cancels? I'd love to have a guide with the applied names and picture example.
Thanks in advance! |

Bear in mind that neither Cole nor Skinner & Eno are about fancy cancels exclusively. |

You might also want to look at the Alexander Simpson book on the USPCS webpage - it is more postal markings than fancy cancels, but might be of interest (and the price is right). |
