A recent addition to the library.
The Guidebook & Catalogue of Canadian Stamps 1970-1971

My wife wondered why I would want a catalogue from 1971? But it contains stories behind the production and history of each Canadian stamp to date.
For example, did you know the 'mufti' issue of King George VI 1937 (the first issue where his is wearing a suite) was actually designed for Edward VIII. Since it was not finished in time before Eddie abdicated, the portrait was changed to George.
Who knew?

I'm not going to bother illustrating it because it has simply a red paper cover containing the words Verzeichnis der Post und Telegraphenanstalten in Jugoslawien. Yes that's right, it's an alphabetical list of Yugoslav post offices in 1931; actually a modern reprint of a prewar book by Etzold.

OK, it's not exactly a rivetting read, and I can't see Lloyd Webber making a musical out of it. But if you are interested in postal markings and postal routes in the SHS after WW1 (and if you're not you ought to be, because they're fascinating) this is the most helpful thing you'll ever find because it lists them not just by their Serbo-Croat names but by the old Austro-Hungarian ones as well. It also lists their controlling office and the railway route, if any, which they are on.

What are you waiting for? Have a word with John Barefoot and see if he's got any left at the giveaway price of £10.

And to anyone else who is my age: remember what Beachcomber made out of the Directory of Huntingdonshire Cabmen!

New book at my house.. NIMROD ILLUSTRATED

I've only started to read, but for anyone interested in Shackleton or Antarctica, this book is wonderful. I'll try to post more info after I read the text. So far, I've only thumbed through looking at the amazing illustrations and photographs, like this one

A relative cheapy from ebay.

I've just finished reading this, very easy to read and with a logical and clear progression through the issues.

It gives me confidence to tsckle the pile of US dues I have set aside for future action.

Received three new books yesterday. They're handbooks on German censor markings in WWI and WWII.

Noticed a Billig's Philatelic Handbook Volume 33 '19th Century US Fancy Cancellations' 1972 for US$16 in a local 2nd hand book shop.

Not sure if I really need it, but it looks interesting, and could come in handy.

Another for my Antarctic Library

"Discovery Illustrated" is the story - primarily in pictures - of the Royal Research Ship 'Discovery' and the British National Antarctic Expedition in 1901-1904.
