Great books Jamesw

I have the one on the Squared Circles and the Constant Plate Varieties On the Small Queens.

It is interesting to note that the author Hans Reiche, who is well known for Canadian plate variety studies, especially the Admirals, was also a topic in a book titled "Deemed Suspect". It was about illegal aliens coming in to the country during WW 2. He was once thought to have had Nazi affiliations, but, this was proven false, and, he was in fact, anti Nazi.

As most philatelists know, he became well known in different Canadian areas for a variety of topics. I have several of his books and they are all quite informative.

Hi Bujusu,

Interestingly, it was Albert Einstein, a friend of the family, who spoke up for Hans Reiche to support his release from internment at Camp Monteith in Canada. He had been moved there from England in 1940. Here is a snap of the man speaking at the Canadian Philatelic Society of Great Britain. He had been elected a fellow of the society in 1979.

Thanks for that Terry.

An interesting photo.

He used to have a column in the BNAPS journal some time ago too.

I bought, just this morning, this French book "L'Univers des Timbres" at Barcelona's puces market (Encants Vells). Later, at home I discovered that it was the French version (Suiss printed) of the book "Stamp Univers" by the Master James Mackay. One of my favourite philatelic writers since the 1980's on the BFB.

More than 300 pages and hours of interesting reading lay ahead. I'm glad I can read French!

Here are a couple of more items I just got for myself as Christmas presents!

COMMEMORATIVE POSTAGE STAMPS OF THE UNITED STATES - Ralph Kimble

I was a bit surprised to see that there are no stamp images in this one, but there are some photos of what looks to be the primary references used for the stamp designs. But then again I think publishers were not allowed to print images of stamps just yet.

And it is signed by the author!

U.S. Commemorative Stamps. of the 20th Century by Max G. Johl Vol. 1&2

Does anyone know how many total volumes there are to this 20th Century series? These cover the periods 1901-1935 and 1935-1947 respectively.

Just picked up 'Canada Domestic and International Postal Rates and Fees 1870-1990' by Robert C. Smith and Anthony S. Wawrukiewicz.
Not a gripping plot line, but basic info that I'm sure will come in handy.
