Here are three nice cancellations from NY and Vermont.

The South Wardsboro cancel is a stock cancel used by about 20 other post offices in the US.

Can you see the Indian's Head in the killer? This wasn't used for very long since the ink tended to fill in the design.

This is the only known cover from Footprints.

Hi,
in a batch of covers & postcards I got a few days ago, I just discovered this card which travelled halfway round the world just for saying hello. 2 nice cancels, both upside down, and on the other side two nice girls. 111 years old (the card, not the girls).
Enjoy!
Heinrich

"nicest cancellation on cover over 100 years old"
Wow, wert, thats kinda tough! But, I'll give it a try. Here's two from Cahato, Cal, almost a year apart, but the P.O. at Cahato was still using the carved cork grid and the same blue ink.

Because I really couldn't decide, here's a couple of Wells Fargo covers! All of these covers are from Mendocino County, Cal.

Had to edit and add a couple more, these are my two favorite covers, from the tiny coastal town I lived in for 22 years. These two covers span the use of two different postmarks in 3 months. Both postmarks also cancel the stamp.

Keep the covers coming!

Glen - wow!

Littleriverphil - I have a Cahto and Puntas Arenas, but both aren't nearly as nice as yours!

Wert - thanks for starting this thread and showing your neat Canadian queens - great to see early covers.

I guess everyone would have their own opinion of nice. This is a particularly scarce machine cancel from more than 100 years ago.

A fancy duplex cancel.

orstampman, I'd love to see them, I grew up in Point Arena, which is what Puntas Arenas was re named in 1889. On the Wells Fargo cover I showed, the return address is Point Arenas. Puntas Arenas was the 2nd post office opened in Mendocino County, the first being Russian River ( Nov 1, 1854- Apr 27 1855), moved into Sonoma County by boundry change.

My earliest Point Arena cover and the earliest Mendocino Cover I know of.

Now for the task of finding them..., I'm sure they're safe, no-one else can probably find them! When I do, I'll be glad to post them.

I see that your Wells Fargo cover spells it "Punta Arenas" and not "Puntas Arenas", interesting. I remember driving through Point Arena often on the coast (Hwy 1). Beautiful Northern CA coast. As a kid once with a friend, we rented a crab cage and placed it off the end of a dock in Bodega Bay and boiled/ate all of the crabs. OOPs, rambling.

This was a hard one! There are a few I absolutely love but to save time & space I only picked out 5.

These next two cancellations are listed in Skinner-Eno reference as ST-D1

This one listed in Skinner-Eno as CR-X19 1861 but obviously used in 1865 as well.

I suppose if I had to choose two more they would be these:

I LOVE the whimsical, almost cartoon-ish font of the C.D.S.

And this one- you can see the postal clerk must have been having a bad day just from the spattering of ink much like rays of the sun or perhaps a splash in a puddle..But thought provoking to me anyway. This is also a historic local piece from my current location here in Clearfield, Pa. The historical society wants this badly and has made me nice offers for it but I politely decline..

Hi pjsstamps. That would require work on my part, so it may take a day or two to get a scan of the whole cover.
