Ha! My favorite cartoon when I was a kid. Still one of my favorites. I was thinking American, but it didn't turn up in Mass. Thanks Dan!

Alas, it could also be a persons name or any other word which starts with A. It will take some luck in finding another example that shows more, or an example still on a document. |

Not sure if these make the grade or not: For some reason, almost all of my Washington USIR stamps are pen canceled! |

Per Scott: Quote: In the first issue, canceling usually was done with pen and ink and all values quoted are for stamps canceled in that way. Handstamped cancellations as a rule sell for more than pen. Printed and stencil cancellations are scarce and command much higher prices. Herringbone, punched or other types of cancellation which break the surface of the paper adversely affect prices. |

THANKS Rev! I wonder why that was, though... I mean, was it that they figured a pen cancel was "personal" and not easy to fake? |

Two words: cost and convience.
Getting a handstamp or stencil made cost a lot more and required more up front planning, whereas everyone had pen and ink handy. That said, handstamping documents was faster than manuscript canceling with pen and ink.
Printed cancels were the purview of companies doing large numbers of transactions, thus making it cost effective to run sheets of stamps through presses to precancel them. |

This one is interesting... cancels at perpendicular angles. I wish it were a complete document for context. |

In last week's Aldrich auction there was an example of this cancel, which I almost bid on. I'm glad I didn't, as rummaging through stacks of unprocessed stuff, I found the example below that I had won in one of his auctions about a year and a half ago. It got buried and promptly forgotten. I have far too many piles of stuff around here... such is the life of a philatelic hoarder. This is a very popular printed fancy cancel, by the company Catlin & Freese, for "Catlin's Improved Fire and Water Proof Cement". The diagonal line is a preprint paper fold. The majority of examples seen are faulty to some degree. |

A very scarce large-format custom house broker stencil cancel. I'd love to find a full strike on a block of 4 somewhere, but this is the first example I've ever seen of part of the cancel, let alone a full example. Ex-Curtis. |

Dan, as I'm sure you know, there was an example in the Aldrich auction last week that went for $115.00. I don't have a lot of auction experience, but the bidding seemed pretty aggressive for cancels. I persisted (and overpaid, I'm sure) on two cancels that I really wanted. I'll post them when they arrive. |

Dadgum it! You're right, it was Aldrich, not Eric's auction. Post edited above. Just out of cusiosity, which lot numbers did you win? We may have been bidding against one another; I was the underbidder on a half dozen lots, and won 3 lots.
P.S. Any chance you might be joining Bart and me at CHICAGOPEX in November? |
