It was late last night so I didn't have a chance to research the G&R cancels. Erick Jackson has a RB11b listed as Grosvenor &Rixchards (sic). I found this 1876 advert on ebay: |

Need help - can anybody recognize this (I assume proprietary) cancel based on only the small portion here? Thanks! |

Wow, thanks Dan! For a 10 cent tax that must have been an expensive photo. |

I was actually thinking it must have been a playing card company cancel. |

Especially love the Levy & Hamlin Bros. cancels. As you may know, there was just a discussion about the Levy in another thread on this forum. |

Very nice. I like the rimless circular cancels. I haven't actually bought any revenue material for quite a while... hrmm... need to fix that. |

Time to dredge this thread up from the depths... An unusual clock face cancel. A weird one... two strikes of the same company's cancel, but 3 years apart. |

Given the strength of the 1872 cnacel and the weakness of the 1875 cancel is seems more likely that the latter was applied first with a wrong datestamp, and that the strong 1872 was applied over it after to correct it. There is no reason that a 4 cent proprietary should lay around cancelled for 3 years before being used. Cute item. |

Looks like an A to left as name starts. My guess would be American Manufacturing Company. I did not find a reference with Google though. |

There was a company in Massachusetts in the 19th Century called Ames Manufacturing Company, which was famous for making swords, among other things. But I have no idea whether Ames is the "A" in your cancel. I tried Google (which you have probably tried too), but no luck. |
