Only three-quarters? I would have thought more.

If I had confined my sample to Bill's Bargain Stamps, the proportion would have been MUCH higher.

These R84c's were all in one glassine. They looked like they may have been taken out of a larger group, since they all seem to be socked on the nose. They are all from Orray Taft & Co. a wool dealer in Providence Rhode Island.

edit, I had put & between Orray and Taft.

Ah the R84 - one of my favorites! No joke! I love collecting color varieties and this one is a bonanza. It looks like you have a mix of the pale to deep mauves of the late printings. Maybe a blackish purple in the upper left? A few lilacs possibly?

Nice Rusty. Most of the Orray Taft cancels I've seen are later years. Here's my homeade page of R84s. The imperf is obviously trimmed. If anyone wants to comment on my color judgements please do. I'm still learning. I've generally followed the Boston book when putting these pages together. As I find examples of other shades and papers I add them.

I had no idea that there were so many color variations.
Very nicely done!

Yes, I love the display of the shade varieties. I do sort of the same thing, but with fewer examples and using Vario pages.

Likely chemical/environmental exposure, but I love the end result.

Back on topic, some RB cancels for Rusty...

Just added this one. WHile it looks like a manuscript cancel, it's actually a well-known printed signature cancel.

The sharpest, fullest strike of this cancel I've ever seen:

Another new addition:

One of my all-time favorites, attributed as Joseph Scholl, but I've had that questioned, so I'm unsure.

And a way cool double strike:

Reed's India Remedies:

And one of the most sought-after, Victor E. Mauger. Only appears (as far as I know) on the 5-cent 2nd proprietary issue, make it a moderately expensive proposition under any circumstances.

Wow, that blue is wild!

I did think that all of the shades that I saw in my group, was from
some sort of toning. I never considered different inks or colors.

Very interesting, thanks for turning on the lights!

It's the same kind of color changeling that occurs on the 24 cent 1861 postage issue; it's not a natural shade although it occurs often enough that whatever caused it must be a fairly common substance. Whatever red was originally in the ink has been bleached out.

Wow. I've seen the crown on your website and the pine tree either there or someplace else. I especially like the printed signature cancel, but all of these are awesome. I'll contact my banker tomorrow.
