In theory it could be a Canadian cancel. It might have been on a passage ticket used when the river froze and some Canadian ships came to the US side to load and unload because there was moving water there and used their normal cancel. I know of a passage ticket used in just such a manner with a first issue revenue on it.

A couple of interesting cancels just in from ebay. First is a WB&D Sept 14 1863 on an R4c. Second one is one of the most beautiful manuscript cancels I've seen on an R116. Enjoy!

I have one of the WB&D cancels which I picked up about 40 years ago. This is the only other example I have ever seen. Mine is also on a one cent Telegraph.

Yes, along with other fancy monograms on proprietary stamps. No attribution to any of them.

I think that the monogram "cancels" might be from the below watch company, with the letters on the revenue stamps not actually representing the name of the company at all.

See below for my conjecture behind these stamps.

Or, these monogram cancels are all just a coincidence.

Jim

Jim,

What are your thoughts as to why a watch company would have been using proprietary stamps?

Ron,

Not sure, honestly.

I had enough of a headache figuring out why a watch company would need denominated stamps with monograms!

Maybe a short-lived promotion involving a taxed proprietary product combined with a pocket watch? Like a buy a watch, get some perfume free type of deal? So they used their monogram handstamps instead of a dated cancel?

Hopefully the answer will reveal itself, one day.

Jim
