Hi, Jorge - that definitely looks like real fishing netting used for securing the Samoan bridge; beautiful stamp.
The fishing folk on Mayotte may also be women. Mayotte has been an official part (Department) of France since 2011 - which means that it is also a part of the European Union, an outermost region. Mayotte lies just west of the northern tip of Madagascar.

Codfish in the western Atlantic was over-fished to such an extent that the species almost became extinct. One can almost get the impression that the fish depicted on the stamp is doing his last gasp. Saint Pierre et Miquelon are small French islands off the southern coast of Newfoundland; their fishing villages thrived before the ban on fishing cod. The stamp is in French francs, since 2000 the islands have the € Euro.

If we put your Barbados Casting Net fishing stamp in a dark drawer with my Barbados Casting Net fishing stamp, would we come back, some day, to find a lot of little Barbados Casting Net fishing stamps?

I followed my rule - never inspect an auction lot until you no longer remember, or no longer care, what you paid for each item - so this has been 'aging' while I've been declaiming that I have no fishing net stamps.

Now, that is a catch!

This stamp is something of a mystery as it does not actually show a fisherman casting his net.



The stamp was originally designed to show the dangers of swimming but was deemed too horrific to be put on sale as such. The caption was changed to what you see now but the stamp portrays the Barbados Giant Flying Jelly-fish, native to that area, attacking a wader...you can clearly see his left arm has already been devoured.

This is another FAO stamp calling for sustainable fishing. The lobsters on the march aren't the same species as the ones found along the Maine coast, those have large claws. Migratory formations of this kind are called queues (photo by H. Hall). The fish may be tuna.
