John Talman Stamp Store In Toronto

Does anyone know if their downtown Toronto store is still open for business with their large retail stock of Canadian stamps?

Jogil, I live in Brampton, just outside Toronto. I called and their answering service came on. Perhaps they are on vacation. I'll try again later during the week and let you know if anything has changed.

EasyOne: I also phoned them and got an answering machine. I read that they had a flood a few months ago in their store. I hope that not too much damage happened since they have a big stock of Canadian stamps.

I emailed John Talman and got this reply:

Our store on Yonge Street is not open anymore. We had a flood there in late-September, and then our landlords asked to vacate the location by late-October. We still operate our online store and ebay business and a lot of the remaining stock is in storage. We can fill want lists and can meet in person with customers at the storage space. We also still hold auctions. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thank you.

Hope this solves the "mystery."

EasyOne: Thanks for posting this. I also emailed them but have so far gotten no response back from them.

I visited the store a few months ago and John told me he was moving. Not sure how he could have been flooded as his store was on the second floor; could have been sprinklers I suppose but he did have stuff piled all over the place so If a pipe broke in a nearby washroom, it could have affected some of his material.

I heard from the fellow I buy supplies on Yonge St. recently that Mr Talman was going out of business. Won't repeat stories I was told, but understand he's no longer in the trade. That's what I was told, anyway.

I got an email from them saying that they are no longer at their Yonge St. store address anymore. They are on ebay and bidstart. If you have to see them then it's by appointment only.

My father was a customer of his for many years.
I made an appointment with Mr. Talman, surrendered stamps for auction, attended the unreserved May 20th 2018 auction, and then received no communication from him.
I phoned him once and was treated like a collection agency, and later he signed for a registered demand letter which he has subsequently ignored.
All his businesses became "inactive" (do your own Nuans Search on {John H Talman}) in 2014 due to non-complaince with the Corporations Tax Act.
Better Business Bureau complaints (and complaints in review form) seem to be from 2015 onwards. I document this on my website. Beware.

Circleround, sorry to hear that. I had many dealings with John over a twenty year period. Purchases only and it was OK.

While at an auction in Halifax N.S, I was talking with a new dealer out of Ottawa. I told him I previously dealt with Talman and the rumor was that John may be getting ready to retire and sell off his remaining inventory. I believe it was at the end of 2015 or start of 2016.

On the weekend, I purchased a couple inexpensive stamps from Hipstamp - John H Talman. So he is still selling, assuming that is the same person.

Mr. Talman is indeed still selling and he conducted another auction at the Eagles Club on October 14th 2018. I lodged complaint 1383906 with the Better Business Bureau yesterday. Under BBB reviews he has done the same auction misappropriation to people in 2016 and 2017. I figure Mr. Talman no longer has a long term view. Talman was my first foray into selling stamps and I learnt a lesson.

Conversely I just sold stamps with Mowbrays in New Zealand where they have 70% reserve, and they are professional in their communication and their knowledge. The Auctioning moral for me is to avoid individuals and stick with a firm that seems to have a long term view.
