Stamp Mounts?

What type of stamp mounts do you use?

I have some pre-cut Scott mounts left over from the last time I was into collecting. They're the kind with black backing, split down the middle. Many years ago I also used Crystal Mounts, but I don't believe they are made anymore.

I'll need to restock soon, so I'm open to suggestions. Do people prefer the pre-cut mounts, or the strips that need to be cut? Any particular brand, any particular supplier you've been happy with?

In my experience Showgard and Scott are about equal. I like the black-backed for their contrast. Also I prefer the use of the strips and a guilliotine (sp?) cutter. This just seems to make sense to me from a working standpoint.

Thanks for the responses. It looks like Subway stamp also has some nice stockbooks, which I'm also in the market for. I just need to decide whether I want a stockbook, or just a binder with stock sheets.

Is a special cutter strictly necessary, or can I just use scissors? (sorry if that's a silly question)

I use Showgard because I always have. The Scott product is good also, though.

I don't think you will be happy with the results if you use scissors. It will be very obvious that the cuts are not square when you put the stamp in there.

It would be more convenient to use the binder with stock sheets.
You can always rearrange your stamps without a lot of hassle

Tell you what guys, I got these Schaubek mounts. precut and strips. run half the price of Scott & Showgard
and to me just as good. Had some for sale. but just got an email and a guy might buy all I have left.
but I don't need to tell you all where to get them, i'm sure you know. If not email me.

Mystic Stamp Company sells a line of stamp mounts that seem to be equal in quality to Scott or Showguard. Another source that I've used is www.collecting-supplies.com

I just use scissors to cut the strips. First I place the mount in a greeting card and use it as cutting guide to get a square cut.

Also, an X-acto Knife works well -- especially if you use a straight edge as Tom recommended.

OR ... A couple weeks ago, I went to the local Wal-Mart to get an Exacto. I searched high and low, but couldn't find them. However, in the hardware section, they had a small cutter made by stanley with a long blade that snaps off in segments. It was on a couple dollars; cheaper than Xacto and longer lasting?

I use the Schaubek Hingeless albums and like their mounts very much. They're clear, not black, but are a little less glossy than some mounts I've seen. Once the stamp is inserted, the mount almost disappears and doesn't give too much reflection off the surface. Of course, in bright light at the right/wrong angle, ALL mounts will cause a little glare. But I like the Schaubeks.

A few years ago I purchased on (surprise, surprise, surprise) ebay, a set of "MNH" prexies. The $1, $2 and $5 were used. All MNH were in black mounts. About a year after receiving them I decided to transfer the stamps to my album. To my utter dismay, the former owner placed the MNH stamps in the mounts and then had his dog slobber all over the back of the mount to adhere them to the album page. Only 5 stamps are undamaged. Several were so badly stuck that in the process of removing them, I ended up damaging them even more, ie these now have thins.

I use the clear mounts with scissors because if the cut is a little off then it can't be seen. I suppose if a judge was looking close I'd get points off tho'.

Just use the staple gun -- after that, NOBODY will notice whether the cuts were perpendicular or not.
