Figured if I'm going to collect Zeppelin covers, I should grab this one. A fraction of the cost of the C13-C15. I don't really expect to ever own those.
Would like to catch the C18 as a FDC flown on the Graf.

Inexpensive unused C18's have flooded ebay for ages...
you can pick up a nice mint copy around $28-$30 or so...

Here's a beauty MNH for $39 from one seller that would
actually grade quite high... and he's accepting offers...

P.S. Gum wrinkles/creases are quite common for this issue...

Disi, I've recently begun focusing on Zeppelin covers. LZ3-USS Los Angeles and LZ127-Graf Zeppelin.
The Graf made a flight to the U.S.for the Century of Progress. The stamp was issued to commemorate that flight, which was from Miami, to Akron and then Chicago.
In my initial post I mentioned a FDC for this. Looks like there cannot be such a thing. The stamp was issued Oct. 2nd. The flight was later in the month.

Cjd, It's pretty clean. The stamp is nicely centered also.

Those 1933 Chicago zep covers are always interesting. What a sight the Graf must have been circling over the city. I also collect other covers from that world's fair.

stampcrow that's a great cover of the "baby zepp".

If you google "c18 fdc" you'll find a number of FDCs dated October 2, 1933. This one is particularly pretty (not mine unfortunately).

boomer, the overflight seems to have been a highlight of that expo. Of course the twist to the story was the swastikas present on the tail of the Zep.

Jenny2, that's interesting. I don't understand...
I need the Frost catalog!

stampcrow the cover would have been mailed from the USA to Friedrichshafen, Germany on October 2, 1933 for carriage on the Zepp's mid-October, 1933 South American flight which ended in the USA (Miami, Akron and Chicago). Notice the difference in the cachets: yours says "Dispatched from Miami" and the one I posted says "Dispatched from Friedrichshafen".

Bing...on goes the light bulb. Thank you Jenny2. I wonder how long it would have taken me to figure that out? *don't answer that*

Thanks KirkS. I'm hoping to put together a nice album display of zep covers. Umm, I only have seven at this time, but it's a start.

Hi Stampcrow. You mention the Los Angeles as being LZ-3 which confuses two of the three official designations it had during its life. When it was built in Germany it was given the German designation of LZ-126. The LZ stands for Luftschiff Zeppelin. Luftschiff is German for air ship. The 126 is the sequential number as it was the 126th built by the Zeppelin factory. When it was given to the US Navy as part of the war reparations the US demanded for ending the war, the US Navy gave it a US Navy designation of ZR-3. The ZR stands for Zepplin-Rigid and the 3 is the sequential number of ZR airships owned by the US Navy it was their third. The US Navy also considered it to be similar to a ship and so they gave it a name like they gave to their ships which in this case was the Los Angeles. So the correct designation would be either Los Angeles or LZ-126 or ZR-3. By the way, there have been four USS Los Angeles's in the US Navy. The first was a tanker that served from 1917 to 1919, the second was this airship that served from 1924 to 1932, the third was a heavy cruiser that served from 1945 to 1963 and the last, so far, was a submarine that served from 1976 to 2010.

Kimo, very sloppy of me. Of course the ZR3 is the correct designation.
I was aware of the cruiser. The other USS Los Angeles' I did not know of. Thanks!
