I came across this British website today:

http://www.stuffusell.co.uk

Something like this would really take the hassle out of selling on ebay.

It also seems very practical - it would be possible to set up a business along these lines in every city or town in the world.

What do others think about the idea?

Was this not a common enterprise in Australia? These store fronts popped up in the U.S. ten or even fifteen years ago, and most of them didn't make it very long. It was certainly easy, but here, at least, it was very expensive.

I had a friend who did that casually, as an adjunct to another business, and when all of the separate charges were totaled, he routinely ended up with half. For those who could not imagine how to do it themselves, or didn't want to, I guess it worked out okay.

Well, I've never heard of this before but think it's a pretty good idea for people who are time-poor and don't want the hassle of being a newbie ebay seller (which is a very serious issue), but also want to get the best price they can in an auction.

I tried to get a housemate started selling on ebay, but after three days they froze his account without so much as saying why.

Really nothing new here. It's just someone selling your stuff for you on e-bay on consignment basis. Many people are engaged in this business in the USA (and I believe some even have physical shops for you to drop off your stuff).

BTDT (Been There, Done That)

Ten years ago, we decided to put my newly-late sister's handbags et al on ebay via whatever-they-were-called-then.

Contacted a dozen '?consultants', got responses from two, picked one.

She gleefully & energetically cleaned-out the closets and, then, did nothing, zero, zip, for weeks & weeks.

This blew us right past the Xmas season, diminishing potential yields.

These days, we would know to check the feedback, etc, of the 'consultant'; then, not so much.

The brick'n'mortar ebay consultants were an interesting contradiction in terms, adding all that overhead (rent, staff) to the overhead-free internet marketplace that was enjoying explosive growth because it was overhead-free.

Epic fail.

http://drop-off-stores.com/Drop-Off...-stores.html Drill-down, and see who you can find near you.

All that having been said, the pawn shop next door to my neighborhood collectibles shop is out-pawning the other pawn shops by selling on ebay. I've seen the tubs of boxes at the nearby branch post office, and, man, are they doing a business! They even have a billboard on a nearby artery advertising the website & brick'n'mortar shop.

Perhaps it can be be summarized thus: as a pure play, ebay drop-off does not work; but as an adjunct to an existing store, it can work just fine.

Cheers,

/s/ ikeyPikey
