Just by eyeballing it I would say it is Perf 13, carmine in color from the 1864-71 set. |

Thanks for looking at it, smauggie. Here's some better info, and a scan next to a "Carmine" stamp... I'm still struggling with a positive id. Perf.: 12-1/2 Wmk.: 139 ("1") |

The carmine stamp that you've choosen as a comparison, the Sc O10s is a light shade of carmine, a better carmine to compare would be Sc 220, a deeper more vibrant shade of carmine. That aside, interesting overprint with both first and last letters dropped. |

The Tasmania 1d. is not Carmine, it is classified as Dull Vermilion in Gibbons,
Pagoda |

Thanks, pagoda. I feel like we're getting warmer. However, I'm not familiar with Gibbons.
littleriverphil, I did notice those letters on the Franklin before but didn't think twice until you mentioned it. |

Thanks, smauggie. I agree it's 29a or 29b.
The bigger issue here is how I'm interpreting this catalog. For some reason I'm not seeing watermark 139 associated with this stamp. Could someone explain this to me. Teach a man to fish... |

If you have even a passing interest in British Commonwealth stamps, it is well worth your while to seek out a Stanley Gibbons Commonwealth and British Empire catalogue. For years, it ran to 1952, though in the last several years, it has been extended to 1970.
Invaluable, and an older used version will be fine for identification purposes. The values won't be current, but you can still see relative values, even in a catalogue that is 10 or 15 years old. |
