My dad passed away and we inherited his rather large collection of stamps. There are many huge books as well as loose stamps. Alot of the stamps are European, Great Britain, many collected by his father who was in WW1 as well as my dad who was in WW2. We have no idea what to do with them. The books are in great shape. Hoping there is someone out there who can give us an idea on how to find an honest appraisal or how to go about selling them. We are located in western Canada.

welcome to the forum Deanna, first of all...Is there any way you can post some pictures..?
Or you can approach a dealer and if he/she thinks you have valuable stuff, you can put it up for auction, keep it for the future, of contact stamps clubs..it is up to you.

Pictures, definitely. It's usually the older stuff (19th century) that's worth any money, so try to post a few pictures of those if you have them. Please don't take that to mean that all 19th century stamps are valuable - amongst some valuable ones are thousands of them that are worth essentially nothing. However the stamps that are valuable do tend to be on the older side. Also, there are stamps from later years that *are* valuable, but they are fewer and farther between amongst the really cheap, common ones. Long story short, the best chances of having anything worth anything is in the older issues.

Hi Deanna, you have come to an excellent resource. Folks have already provided great advice.
By posting some decent quality scans of the oldest dated pages for several countries that include larger collections, this community could likely tell you generally if you might own a more in demand collection. That said, most stamps are relatively inexpensive so it's impossible for anyone to guide you sight unseen.

Sound like it is an extensive collection. Possibly with older issued stamps. So there is a good chance you have a somewhat valuable collection. I am unfamiliar with Canadian stamp organizations, but if you go to the American Philatelic Society website www.stamps.org I'm sure you can find a reputable stamp dealer who can help you determine value. Dealers often take collections on consignment and offer them at auction for a percentage of the sale price. Some dealers may offer a cash buyout price if they see a valuable resale. Best of luck to you!
