Perhaps the amounts ahown on the different stamps were a fantasy, or they applied to some charity work that was being promoted by the sale of these?

People colect topics and themes and ciderella stamps or poster stamps or fantasy stamps like these are not used for the showing of the payment of the fee for carraige of the post or mails but to promote and idea or charity.

Very collectible even to keep or to sell.

Naming them with the correct term or terms is important, so search for them under different names so when or if you sell them, or put a note with them for later consideration of others, they know what they are and a price sold for in what year or month.

Searching ebay or Delcampe might yield some results.

I think our mysterious Mr. williams is a Herburt M. Williams, a retired Army colonel, who claimed to have a claim on the uninhabited area. Read on...

Our Col. Herburt Williams had coins made for this "Nation" as well from a German mint. See these coins...they're beautiful...

Quote:
[quote]As a result of Hurricane Beulah, which struck the southwestern US in 1967, a 400 acre island was created in the Rio Grande when a connecting strip of land on the Texas side of the border was washed away. Because the newly-formed island was south of the main river channel the US government decided that Mexico was its rightful owner, however the Mexican government disputed this.

On the grounds that the Mexican Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo and the
Plan of Iguala gave the Cherokee people the right to establish a nation, Colonel Herbert M Williams of Brownsville, a fifth generation Texan of 1/4 Cherokee descent, subsequently purchased the island from Mexican owners for $400,000. He secured a legal title in 1974, aided by an obscure Mexican law which automatically makes any Indian owner of border territories a Mexican citizen.

According to a 25 December, 1978, article in Time magazine, the wealthy Mr Williams had plans for a casino, a TV station, tax-free companies, Swiss-style bank accounts, and the registration of ships. Williams' Cherokee Nation is known to have issued the four coins shown above, which were produced by a mint in Germany. They remain its chief historic legacy.

I wonder what was the end of all this. Or does it even have an end?

I have many of theses type "Cinderella stamps" though not for postage, and from all over the world they are still a bit of history. Some people collect all different types of stamps. If your interests include getting involved in collecting stamps, I myself would proudly display them. Gary

I can't find anything else either. Do the words "chief historic legacy" mean that the nation "The Cherokee Nation" no longer exists?

Whether or not it still exists, current evidence seems to indicate that there was at least a nation called "Cherokee Nation" which had it's own stamps and coins, which were never used. But does that legitimately make them cinderellas?

If you find one of those stamps used, just don't misplace it.

Here's another reference to the island and a mention of the stamps that were produced. They are described as sample postage stamps. The reference is from a newspaper from Dec 23rd 1982. Newspaper is called the "HOUR".
The stamps seem to be in a similar category as those produced by the Hutt River Provence in Australia. Stephen

Not worthless at all. You have a very limited and highly interesting piece on your possession. You have a man's hopes and dreams on paper.

Check ebay and bidStart closed listings and see if you can see any. If not you could take it to a dealer and see what he thinks. Also try to get a better idea of it's scarcity before selling it. You never know, you might have an item that is better off being consigned for auction.

Email Bill Weiss and see what he thinks. I'm sure he won't mind. I hope he doesn't, since I said he wouldn't.
