12-P Black Stamp For About $200.00 Mint..?

Hi guys..Was just looking trough my 1912 Stanley Gibbons Catalogue and had to laugh ( and cry )when I saw some of the prices of stamps in 1912..Other countries in this volume with the same pricing..YIKES

£110 was probably the annual wage for a skilled worker doing 50-60 hours per week in 1912, so things haven't changed that much. You would have had to be rich to pay £110 for a piece of gummed paper!

GeoffHa...Ya, your could be right...This catalogue has all the British Commonwealth countries in it...Fascinating prices and pictures of stamps..Varieties of stamps I have never seen in a catalogue before.

Here are a few old pictures of how and what stamp collectors used over 100 years ago..Not too much different than today..Here is the link below..Be prepared to slow page fill...Remember, this was taken from original pages, that means as old as it is even the white portions of the pages are subject to full picture quality...I use OKULAR PDF READER which to me is the fastest and most detailed reader out there and to me far more superior that ABOBE reader and it is still slow for me..

Had no trouble viewing this and it is fun to see. Predates the finding of the 2 cent Large Queen on laid paper by about 13 years.

I have a 1904 Gibbons, and that 12d black used (Gibbons wouldn't quote a mint price) would have cost you £70. Who said catalogue prices never come down?

Don't cry wert, I have the same feeling when I look at the prices in my 1972 US Scott Specialized catalog. Just keep repeating to yourself...It's all relative...It's all relative...

difference is not so marked as in the earlier issues.
All values may be found with a watermark of
a large letter, or parts of two letters, but this
being only the papermaker's name in the sheet

varieties are not considered of sufficient interest to
be listed separately.

In 1912 the exchange rate was about 4.87 dollars to the pound. Thus the £110 price would be about $536 (US). With inflation, we get a 2015 price of around $12,650. Still a bargain.
