Barrel Postmarks

Does anyone here collect Barrel postmarks? I have seen some Canadian and U.S.A. ones.

Q/ When is a postmark (or the killer, one supposes) a barrel postmark? Is it the 'slats'? Does it have to be circular?

Barrel postmarks were a type of hand cancel or roller cancels used in Canada in the late 19650s and early 1960s. They were also used in the United States. They are popular among collectors. The Postal History Society of Canada has a study group on barrel cancels but I'm not sure it is active at present.

I have been interested in Canadian barrel cancels for a while but have distracted myself too much with many other cancels and stamps as well.

I have saved some pictures from online sources.

Halifax, NS has a modern barrel cancel also, from 2013-4 as far as I know. I have two examples of these, used in the sorting plant here in Halifax. There may be other recent ones across Canada perhaps?

Winnipeg, AB, 3-ring barrel cancel (I think, maybe?)
Could be a later use of a 3-ring orb cancel?

Since the OP mentioned Barrel Postmarks used in the US, here are a couple from my collection -- some 25+ years apart:



The top example is clearly dated November 13, 1957, Boston, Mass. South Postal Annex 15 and is interesting because of the use of "B" perfin stamps for official use in Boston.

The bottom example is less clearly dated but reads January 26, 1983 from Worcester, MA 016 and the machine-type barrel cancel (actually a parcel cancel) was applied to a Certified Mail/Return Receipt Requested business-size envelope.

Bonus #1: these are double-barreled cancels:

Left barrel features: city (Hebrew) // date (Jewish calendar) // city (Arabic).

Right barrel features: city (Hebrew) // date (Common calendar) // city (English).

I believe in Canada we call these key-hole cancels.

Shaped similarily to barrel cancels, look down on the top of a wooden barrel and you see theouter circle of the largest circumference and the smaller circle of the top.

Or toonie cancel...haha

I would have ignored a fax or eMail, but these three letters from a Bratislava lawyer were mailed with EU 1.00 stamps, so their claim that were looking for the MIA heirs of some Slovak who shared our family name and had left an inheritance ...
