Can someone please help to end the madness? I've never come up this empty trying to find a US stamp before but I can't find this one at all.

You have a cut-out from U293, Grant letter sheet, listed with the stamped envelopes & wrappers in the Scott Specialized catalog.

John Becker: A pretty fair chance this cancel is from the same company as the addressee on your U293 letter sheet:



Additional Note: I kept searching for the company as R.M.E. Kings & Co., when, in fact, the company name is "R.M. Ekings & Co." which was the name of a real estate firm in Paterson, NJ.

Mr. (or rather Colonel) Ekings had quite an interesting Civil War record and business interests in Paterson, NJ, as outlined in this biographical sketch:
