As the US already has "Forever" stamps in use for First Class Mail and "Global Forever" stamps for international mail, this seems like a natural extension, although I wonder if confusion by the general public could become an issue?

Quote:
The proposed classification changes (Attachment A) have been approved by the Governors, effective April 26, 2015, and add non-denominated, non-expiring ("Forever") status to stamps for five different First-Class Mail stamp categories: 1) a postcard stamp; 2) the two-ounce letter stamp; 3) the three-ounce letter stamp; 4) the additional ounce stamp and 5) the first ounce nonmachinable surcharge stamp.

...

It is expected that the conversion to Forever stamp status for these additional product categories will reduce Postal Service costs for inventory maintenance and stamp distribution. Once the new categories of Forever stamps are in place, future rate changes should no longer require the retrieval and destruction of outdated denominated stamp stocks and replacement with new denominated stamps. In addition, the ability to continue producing a particular Forever stamp design, without regard to price changes, will enable better management of stamp printing.

Currently, there is no difference in price between #4 and #5, but guess there could be in the future.

This would be a good move. I hope they do it.

To avoid consumer (or clerk) confusion they will have to indicate the class of use on the stamp, and how they do so will be interesting. "Forever--Postcard", "Forever--2oz"? It's kind of awkward for the multi-ounce cases. "Forever--First Ounce Non-Machineable Surcharge" would be a mouthful!

Maybe this filing is a subtle way of opening the door for changes in separating the value for nonmachinable surcharge and second ounce rates?

There are some countries where new issues with specific denominations are becoming a rarity. If the USPS does this, the only (currently for sale) denominated stamps we're likely to see will be small (1-cent, 2-cent, etc) and large ($1 and up). I know, the USPS should come out with a Forever stamp for $1 that will always be worth $1! What's that? Oh, never mind.

The proposal has now been approved, but what's interesting (if I read it correctly) is that the term "Forever" on stamps may be numbered in deference to 1 oz, 2 oz, 3 oz, postcard, nonmachinable, etc.

The proposal claims it will make it easier for the public but in this day most of the general population don't have any idea of postal rates and when someone hunts for a stamp in a desk drawer, they aren't going to be inclined to figure out the rate it covers.

It may pay off in the long run, but the "learning curve" with the general public about it is certainly going to be interesting.

The USPS could make them similar to the old Postage Due stamps only in the center it could say in all caps the rate (1 ounce, 2 ounce, etc.) and make them distinguishable from each other by making them different colors. 1 oz. in red, 2 oz. in green. Just throwing it out there, I know it's likely not practical.

I do think a Forever postcard rate would be smart.
