Thanks Puzzler. I see it now.

canadianphilatelist, after your remark regarding the
smudge on the upper left selvedge I zoomed in on the scan.

The colour does appear similar to the light blue
offset ink compared to the dark blue of the engraved ink.
But maybe it was caused by something else.

We need my buddy wert to analyze it.

It is not even close to the same ink colour..Had to come externally.
Left colour is smudge, and right colour is the inked words.

Also under a different software, I changed the colour of the words to a reddish colour...If the smudge was ink from the printing, it should have a red tinge to it...But it does not..Probably not part of the printing process...

Wert, I wasn't comparing the blue of the smudge with
the grey of the writing text in the selvedge but with the
light blue in the stamp and of the divers.

ohhh...ok...back in a couple of minutes then....

Diver on the left and smudge on the right..Still a big colour difference.

It looks like post production to me too.
Could be blue ink from a pen on someones thumb.
Then again it doesn't look like a thumb or fingerprint.

What about comparing the light blue on this part of the stamp
with the smudge?

I would think probably from printer wiping rolling plate and may have touch the sheet with ink from another run..just my opinion from working as a printer.

I've been looking, off and on, at more and more whales and noticed that the stamps, noticeable by looking at the blue edges, moves up and down and sideways back and forth, but, so far, the blue divers don't move.

So this means the perfs move around on the stamp and sheets, giving us a moving design and leaving a well centered stamp worth much more to collectors than one at odds with the edges and margins.


I didn't even think to notice before as most mopdern stamps don't move around too much. But now, I am looking at engraved and partially engraved (Marine Life again, ha) stamps.
