I have this letter that when I bought it I was told was a French letter with medical references. I showed it to a friend that said it was Latin. He also believed it to be Medival Latin. I was hoping someone here may be able to help translate it. The wax seal was in great shape and my limited search of that leads me to it being German. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Latin is Latin - there really is no such thing as medieval Latin, other than Latin being written by people who somethimes do not know it well enough to avoid some misspellings or grammar mistakes. Also, medieval Latin can sometimes be full of abbreviations that one needs to really know Latin to be able to understand - though these abbreviations typically are used for very commonly repeated phrases such as in a Book of Hours which is very formulaic and they are trying to squeeze in a lot of text on a small page or save time in the laborious task of copying books. |

Hi Canadastamp. Latin is Latin. It has been a dead language for a very long time and so it is unlike English or French or Spanish or whatever that are alive and change over the centuries. For example, this is medieval English which while there are many similarities to modern English, it has its own unique words as well. The same is true for other medieval versions of other living and evolving languages. Latin is not living or evolving.
Whan that aprill with his shoures soote The droghte of march hath perced to the roote, And bathed every veyne in swich licour Of which vertu engendred is the flour; Whan zephirus eek with his sweete breeth Inspired hath in every holt and heeth Tendre croppes, and the yonge sonne Hath in the ram his halve cours yronne, And smale foweles maken melodye, That slepen al the nyght with open ye (so priketh hem nature in hir corages); |

Just an attempt:
Nos Consules, scabini et magistratus Regiae sedis ac liberae Imperialis Vobis aquensis hisce notum Facimus et attestamur, quo hac civitas Divinam fanente gratiam, adhuc saluberrimo fruatur aere, quodque in illa nulla grassetur contagiosa lues; cum itaque Dominus Simon Schmitz hujus urbis Mercator hinc In Italiam transmittat duas sarcinas pannorum in hoc urbe ex vicinia confectorum, signatas M A C No 1 et 2., quorum una consistit In una parte cyaneorum, viridium, coeruleorum, rubrorum et Nigrorum, altera sarcina vero in sex partibus pannorum intermixti coloris; Hinc omnes et singulos cujuscumque status debite requirimus ut dictos sarcinos ubivis locorum transvehi permittant, quod et Nos similiter Demereri non Deerimus. Datum Aquisgrani Hoc 3o.a Julii 1723 J.W. Strauch Secret.
We, the consuls, assessors as well as the magistrate of the Royal and Imperial City of Aachen herewith attest that this free city is still enjoying, by divine grace, healthful air and that there is no contagious pestilence herein; and therefore whilst Master Simon Schmitz, merchant from here, is to send to Italy two packs of cloth manufactured in the vicinity of this city, marked with the sign + MA C No. 1 and 2 Of which one consists of dark blue, green, azure, red and black cloth while the other pack of six parts contains cloth of mixed colour; Hence we request each and everyone of whatever status to permit the said Packs to be carried to any place, so that we would be obliged (we would not fail) to act similarly. Given in Aachen on the 30th of July 1723. J.W. Strauch Secretary

Having brought my grammar book and the 1887 reprint of Cassell's Latin Dictionary by J. R. Beard, D.D., and C. Beard, B.A., I have tried to amend the job a little.

We, the consuls, assessors and the magistrate of the Royal and free Imperial City of Aachen herewith make known and attest that this community is still enjoying, by divine grace, healthful air and that there is no contagious pestilence prowling around; and therefore whilst Master Simon Schmitz, merchant from here, is to send to Italy two packs of cloth manufactured in the vicinity of this city, marked with the sign + MA C No. 1 and 2 Of which one consists of dark blue, green, azure, red and black cloth while the other pack of six parts contains cloth of mixed colour; Hence we request each and everyone of whatever status to permit the said Packs to be carried to any place, so that we shall not fail to act similarly in our turn.
