Just received this card and it fits nicely into my growing collection of French colonial stamps. It is addressed to Darius Milhaud (1892-1974). Milhaud was one of the most prolific of modern French composers and one of the famous "Group of Six" consisting of Milhaud, Poulenc, Honegger, Duray, Auric and Taillefere. Milhaud's most famous work is "The Creation of the World" which can be readily heard on YouTube. The card is dated 1901 when he was still very young and living with his family at Aix-en-Provence.

Are you sure that it has not be addressed to his grandfather or uncle... a close relative with the same name?? It is not usual that a 8 years old kiddo will be titled as "Monsieur"... Mister... Sir? ...

however, you have probably read the text on reverse, and from the content you have confirmed your premise that it has been addressed to the young composer.

Than this could be of some importance as a first fan mail he has ever received ;)

Will be interesting to do some research on this. I did some quick googling and determined that his father's name was not Darius. The youngster was something of a prodigy, so it's possible he was treated as more of an adult than many kids his age. The post card is a picture post card, so there is nothing on the front to suggest it was anything other than a souvenir.

Hi NBStamper,

It seems very reasonable to me that this was sent to the boy Darius.

The post card is printed with a leading "M" for Monsieur, Madame etc. so it would be natural to complete the word.

Thanks nigelc; I am always on the look-out for cards or covers addressed to celebrities especially if they carry interesting postage. A real find would be a card written by or addressed to someone really well-known like the composer Gustav Mahler. His letters would probably fetch several thousands of dollars and any cards or letters sent to him are eagerly sought by historians.
