I am shocked that this Community has no listed sales of stamps to others within this community! While some folks in our Stamp Community fear that our hobby will cease to attract future collectors, I see ZERO stamp sales offerings for sale here among more serious collectors. Why?

I can only guess that folks join this Community to ask questions and learn about philately. But I must assume that no one wants to sell within this more knowledgeable stamp community.

This is wrong-headed in my estimation. Why should we rely on ebay?
I trust folks within this community 100% more than the average ebay buyer.

I don't see any sales listed either. I know at one point people did, but not much anymore.

I think it' because; To list something on ebay is a job in itself. (Been a member for over a decade and my sales are still under 100) I dont sell alot, so each time it's a process.
To add a sale here seem like duplicate work. Although I have bought from folk on here.

Go figure?!....I keep looking at that box in the left hand margin for sales/auctions...and nada!...for a long time.
Maybe more money is to be made on ebay?...apart from that I have no other theories.

Perhaps this harkens back to the old adage: never do business with friends & relatives.

A sale that takes place between two SCFers on SCF can become an SCF issue; but what happens on ebay, stays on ebay.

And, of course, there is that steady stream of anecdotal evidence that there are morons aplenty, waiting to be fleeced, on ebay; not to mention the vastly larger bidding population. No one would want to relieve a forum brother of the kind of cash they'd happily take (and perhaps even dream of taking) from a buyer on ebay.

ebay is setup for selling; SCF is setup for sharing; are people just letting each venue do what it does best?

Cheers,

/s/ ikeyPikey

There will be lots of sales in that 'left hand space' this weekend. It was part of my jobs to do.

I just wish that disi123 would stop banging his head. He could have changed his earlier post when he realized his mistake !

Others should try it. It does work and works very well for all parties. I have been selling on forums mainly for many years and it is much safer, more fun and tons more satisfying.

Watch that left hand space.

Stamp Community allows members to enter their ebay account name - it shows up on their profile page. So! if you are interested in what a particular member has for sale - just click on their name and then on to ebay. Morceau de gateau - as we say in French.

In my four years on the forum, I have seen numerous people try to sell their stamps here on the forum. The most successful have been those who a) offer great deals or b) create excellent listings by adding lots of detail in their listings.

However, my opinion is that most long-term members are interested in being a part of community itself and the collective knowledge that comes with it - buying/selling on SCF is a secondary, if not tertiary interest.

While I agree that I trust the members of SCF more than the average eBay-er, our members are often very specialized in their collecting interests and are savvy when it comes to buying/selling. This forum doesn't have a broad enough audience to allow a seller to get the best price for their items.

There are many SCF members who sell on ebay and will link to their items in our ebay sales forum. For the few that do sell on SCF regularly, I enjoy your listings. Some of my best buying experiences were from SCF members ...

A few years ago this forum made a change that required sellers to be paid-up members of the forum; after that, listings went down 95%.
There was probably a good reason for the change, but buying and selling here has never been the same.

Bonjour area66 - I am chair of the "Establish 'morceau de gateau' Campaign." There are hundreds of us working to get this expression established in Quebec.

Maybe "shocked" was a bit overly dramatic when I saw nothing listed for sale within SCF.
I appreciate the shared thoughts. Obviously, many see SCF as a friendly and personal space where collectors can learn from one another and make new friendships.

I would not be interested in building on my own SCF membership if it did not offer the "Family" environment that the "pillars" have established. SCF as a congenial learning community is superb as it is. So I'm not whining because sales isn't a priority. Reading my very first issues of "The American Philatelist", "Linn's Stamp News" and "Mekeel's & Stamps" makes very clear that there are many stamp sales venues.

So while I can be convinced that maybe it is best for SCF members to do our commerce outside this forum;
it hardly makes sense for a forum of several thousand to show no interest in trading, buying and selling amongst "friends".

I have read with great interest how ebay has outraged many long-term sellers with the company's new Buyer Protection Policy. Sellers can now have their PayPal payments returned to the buyer by ebay without any direct challenge to "problem" transactions. I have a couple albums of dupes I plan to sell or trade. But do I want to have a buyer claim to ebay that my items "Were not what they expected" and then see ebay raid my PayPal account and refund my proceeds? That would not sit right by me.

After I post my 100th topic, I'll post my first sale offering, or trade offering. And I'll see if anyone notices. But being a marketer, I point out that since I have never seen a posted sales item on our forum, I would have no reason to check that link in the future. No traffic certainly doesn't generate much auction bidding.

Cheers all,
