Can anyone help me with this stamp. I'm a junior collector and wonder if the error in the frame at the top is common or rare.

Could be nice.

But, the seeming scraped whiteness around the blue line mistake in the top frame line might indicate some kind of scrape and attempted repair, so as to still have a copy of the stamp perhaps.

Do you have a scan or photo of the back of the stamp on a black surface please?

Here is a scan of the back. There doesn't appear to be any evidence of a repair. To me it seems to look like one or two perforation "dots/cuts" were on the paper before the stamp was printed as the disturbed area seems circular in nature. As for the bent frame, I have no ideas. hope this helps and thanks Puzzler.

Vanchester. Welcome to the Forum. Please stick around and post more pics ... we love them.

I had a frame break on a completely different stamp in another thread that you may want to read.

Yours is a much better example and is definitely a keeper.

Vanchester, that is a pretty stamp and a great picture! It is probably not an error, but it is a very nice variety and well worth keeping in your collection.

Thank you.

Looks good.

The top is interesting. I haven't seen that particular error before, not many Brazil stamps in my possession at this time.

The rest of the stamps seems OK.

Maybe search online a bit, say in Portuguese, as Brazil speaks that language, and see what they are haivng for errors. That is, if no one here knows what it is. There indeed could be someone.

Good luck with it. In Canada it would seem a worthy type of error or cariety to sttract some attention.

Vanchester,

Welcome to SCF!

The stamp you have can be a Scott 229, 251, 280 or 271 depending on its watermark. Colors are not exact on a scanner (or this series) so it could also be ultramarine, Scott catalog numbers 336,437,463A,473 or 482 again depending on its watermark. It is part of a long and complicated definitive series called "Série Vovó" that was issued from 1928 to 1941.

The Brazilian catalog, RHM, doesn't list plate flaws so it isn't much help. There are lots of minor color variations etc. so I'm not surprised that an occasional plate flaw like yours will show up.

I'm sorry I can't give you a feel for its scarcity. Maybe there is a more detailed Brazilian collector that can help.

It definitely is a keeper though!

Edit: forgot some possibilities

Dan

Experienced stamps need a home too. I'd rather have an example that is imperfect than no example.

Thanks everyone for all your words of wisdom and welcome any other tidbits of information. The links provided were very helpful and I have definitely identified it as Scott #437. Again thanks all for your help and maybe one day I will be able to return the favour. Looks like I have found my avatar ......

Not an error, just and oddity due to some debris on the printing plate.
