Does anyone has info on how best measure stamp paper thickness? are there affordable gauges out there, and what precision (0.1 or 0.01mm) would be recommended?

I use a Mitutoyo digital micrometer. It is accurate to 0.001mm. It has a ratchet to prevent crushing the paper.

After a short lesson from a friend who does quality control, I found it works well.

Experienced stamps need a home too. I'd rather have an example that is imperfect than no example.
I collect for enjoyment, not investment.

In a discussion I had with essayk about identifing double paper U.S. banknote stamps, he said

Quote:
Coincidentally, the current issue of the USPCS Chronicle has an article by John Barwis on stamp thickness characteristics of the Bank Note issues. He sets down some important data and measurement standards for the general run of the issued stamps, and once we can figure out a transferrable calibration standard for the measurement of their thickness, this will allow several of us with this kind of specialty material to gather some enlightening data.

If you have not already done so, I hope you will consider investing in a spring loaded paper micrometer/dial thickness gauge calibrated to .0001 inch to measure your stamps
.

That discussion caan be found here.

I have not invested in the above, more stamps came home instead!

Hi All

I have always maintained paper measurement on the U.S.A. First Issue Revenue Series!
