Hi All I was clearing out a lot of paper scrap etc to put into re-cycling and almost, key word 'almost' threw this out. It is an 8-page supplement to a Gibbons Monthly dated June, 1933! It is entirely on Paquebot, Ship and Transportation markings. This is a real beauty to say the least. Hope you enjoy these pages. Chimo Bujutsu

Here's an actual example of item #45 shown on page 3 of your reference: It's one of the few situations where a foreign stamp (in this case, Great Britain) gets postmarked with a New York, NY USA machine cancel. |

I wonder ... how many members are like me? When it comes to paper scrap, envelopes, etc., I TRIPLE check each piece for stamps and philatelic material. I fret at the idea of throwing out something important! |

What a lovely resource to have.
Thank you Bujutsu for posting these!
Makes you want to go start looking for Paquebot cancelled stuff. |

In wt1's post the New York circular part of the machine cancel has the numeral 18 in it. Can anyone tell me what that number represents?

Quote: In wt1's post the New York circular part of the machine cancel has the numeral 18 in it. Can anyone tell me what that number represents? Probably equates to ZIP Code 10018. While ZIP Codes weren't yet in place back in the 1930s, the "zones" were and the New York City ZIP Code ending in 100"18" is probably what is represented. According to a current map, that ZIP Code extends from the West Side waterfront through to Times Square. Also note that if you go back to the illustration of Paquebot postmarks, Scan #3, Item #45 shows this similar postmark also with the numeral "18" in it, so I suspect it was the only one used for Paquebot mail. |

I have an almost identical cover to wt1, with the NY 18 postmark dated October 29 1933. I also have this October 26 1926 postcard with New York 2 |

Bujutsu: could I convince you to change the title to mention something about ship cancellations to make it easier for neophytes like myself to return to your fantastic post? |

Regarding the #18 in the New York cancellations, I believe that this is an office number. Since NY is a very large city, this would be a way of identifying where the cancelling machine was used from. Just a guess.
