I saw a cover being offered on ebay dated 1864 with a note in pencil on the back "Sol Salkind 11-30-65". Is this some type of expertizing notation; if so, what degree of confidence should I place that the cover is genuine? As a newly returned collector, I am trying to get some level of familiarity with notable people in the field, past and present. Does anyone have any suggestions on what Mr. Salkind's background and expertise was and/or where I could get more information about him?

Thank you.

Salkind also conducted postal history auctions. I suspect the notation is a previous owner's record of how he/she acquired the cover rather than an expertization mark.

I agree with revcollector. Sol lived to be very old and in his "retirement" in Florida he supplemented his earnings by consigning to auctions stuff that he had laying around for years. We were fortunate to be one of the auction firms he consigned to and knew him for a number of years. I do not recall exactly when he passed.

Sol Salkind was a Philatelic Expert. If it was expertised by Sol, you can "take it to the bank", as the saying goes.

Thank you all for your input. I have attached a picture of the notation on the back of the cover. Would anyone be able to recognize this as being a notation from him or just someone else writing his name/date on the back? Alternatively, would someone have an example of how he would have typically expertized a stamp or cover?

Thanks again.
