I just want to verify that this stamp can only be a cut-out from some sort of postal stationery. I question this because the paper is a similar thickness of other stamps of the same time period (i.e. thin paper).

Thanks for any confirmation!

It looks like a stationery cutout to me.

"some sort of postal stationery" I believe if it is on thin paper that it was from a newspaper wrapper .

Hi Jenny2U,
Michel's Germany specialised does list an imperf 1g red with large shield, from 1872, with a high catalogue price.
If yours is right it could be a nice find.
I don't know if the same design/value was used on postal stationery. Hopefully PostmasterGS will spot this thread, and chime in.
Best regards
DavidR

IMO, the diagonal Printing (look over the second 1!), it's an indication of stationery cut off. In addition, the back of the item is very clean without any trace of gum.

What you have is a cutout from a postal stationery envelope. The diagonal printing Cursus mentioned is a dead giveaway.

Thank you all! Especially for the information about the diagonal printing - I have learned something new today.

So have I!
Is the fact that the outer frame ring round the eagle is also much clearer on this example another clue? Some of my examples of this 1872 stamp have somewhat indistinct outer frames.
