Oh and guykickinit, thanks! My brother says if I were an animal I'd be a squirrel, and I drink a lot of coffee, so there you go! :)

I would strongly recommend "The Stamp Collector's Encyclopedia" by R.J. Sutton.
The book is inexpensive, readily available and a wealth of knowledge.

Timm, the only review for Amazon on that was two stars due to the illustrations apparently being very blurry. Have you found this to be the case or would you disagree? I can get it for as little as $4 used, so if the illustrations aren't a problem, I will.

Thank you for the link to the online library. I started to read the Brookman and it's wonderful. As a newbie I do not collect 19th century stamp yet. I decided to start at 1930 for now. I was wondering if there is anything that would compare to Brookman for more modern stamps to get to know them better or are the stamps so cheap that nothing is worth publishing?

I have a Linn's stamp identifier, I find I have way more fun looking up stamps in my Scott's catalogues.

Sir Oliver,

If you are looking for a great "starter" reference. consider this book published by USSS. I bought mine for about $20. on ebay.

This is one of my favorite stamp books. As the name implies, it's chock full of maps and images of stamps. It helps make sense of all the various countries and entities that have issued stamps. It also traces the history of the various regions of the world, like Africa for example, from colonial days to independence. And it does lots of other things. It's available on ebay now for $10-$20.

Newbies need two things from their books: technical information, and encouragement/context/reinforcement.

Kinda like reading a book about baseball in January, nu?

The posts so far have included many great suggestions. I am a bit surprised that L.N. Williams "Fundamentals of Philately" is not among them. Perhaps a little advanced, but it contains the answers to so many philatelic questions.
