Canada 16-I

This item came through in a circuit today. It was offered to me for $1500 off Unitrade catalog pricing! Darn, where is the money when you need it? Oh well, it is a very pleasant item to look at... Enjoy

I suggest you ask for a certificate. It look a bit too light for a number 16. You also want to make sure the perf are the right ones. (11 3/4 on all sides)

Since I couldn't afford it anyway, this is just a share at what I got to see. The item is on the way back to the person that sent it my way.

There is one trick you can use to identify the Scott 16 from the Scott 17. For the 1st printing Black Brown shade, the new plate had very strong outer framelines, because it was new.

These very thin outer framelines wear quickly and by the 2nd printing when Scott 17 was released these thin framelines are not strong at all.

When you look at your pic of the 10c Consort, you can see that the outer framelines are faded and missing in some areas. So I don't even have to guess. It is certainly a Scott 17b, I'm afraid.

Here is a scan of a Scott 16 to compare. Look at the left and lower margin. Sorry that it is off center.

Very nice #16 and trick too

Jimjung has a excellent point about the frame lines here are two proofs that help show the subtle difference that can be found. Note the difference on the right frame line on these proofs. Other positions may show other line weaknesses.

Wert, Yes yours is a 17. There are so many shades on these I just generally group them and enjoy the varieties. Virtually every printing has its own shade. Makes for a fun stamp to collect.

Oi! These 16s are lovely. Thanks for sharing them. I would be thrilled to have any of them in my collection. I have a couple of 17s but have never been able to afford a 16 unless it was downright damaged and looked awful.

Some very nice 10c Consort stamps here! I really like this stamp and have quite a few copies. I was able to plate one of the scans, the later proof from watermark with the C Flaw is position 80.

Here is a a scan of position 80 from Ken Kershaw's book on the plating of this stamp. I could tell from the guide dot at right center that your proof was from the right column of the sheet. And the other differences are also on your proof.
