Hi all,

I wanted to see if anyone could help me identify this stamp? It looks Chinese but I'm not quite sure.

Thank you

Early Japan, looks like Scott illustration A1a "Dragons and Denomination".

This represents Japan Scott 5. But before you get your expectations too high, I feel obliged to say that the odds are overwhelmingly that it is a forgery. Early Japan (Scott 1-54A) were very heavily forged, both in Japan and in Europe, a long time ago, and even the oldest albums can be loaded with them.

Perhaps there are those who could make that determination from your current image, but I'm not as experienced, so if it were me, I'd need a larger and much sharper image. However, someone could come along who knows this area better and could say from this stamp. (Technically, it could never be determined to be genuine from a scan -- it would need to be examined -- but it is oftentimes possible to determine something is a forgery from a scan.)

I've heard estimates that, for classic Japan, forgeries outnumber genuine examples by somewhere between 10-to-1 to 100-to-1.

Okay. Does anyone have any advice on how to get high resolution images on here because once I shrink the image to the allowable size on here, it distorts it.

Thanks!

Floortrader, do you know if your stamp is genuine or a forgery? Would be useful for comparison purposes.
