Probably the fate of many local post offices. I still send quite a lot of mail and there are two post offices nearby (Rothesay and Quispamsis, N.B.) that allow hand cancelling. I exchange new issue covers with a member in England and am starting to build a nice collection of new Canadian issues (and British ones too) on hand-cancelled covers with clear local post office markings, not the machine cancels. Most recently, now own a nice cover with the new $5 Canadian flag issue which traveled through the mail to the UK. The Rothesay office was kind enough to ensure it didn't go through the machine cancelling system in Saint John. Too bad about PEI but might be worth visiting a few POs over there this summer and sending myself a few covers.

Wert, thanks for the information. I'll keep an eye out for existing PEI cancels.

If you drop your mail in a mail box it will go to the processing center, but if you drop it to the post office and give it to a clerk, they cancel it in front of you, no need to even ask for it. At least in the 2 small towns I usually post from.
