New Issues: May 2nd., 3RD. And 6th.

Three new Canada Post issues in the next week, including one set of five on Saturday and a single stamp on Sunday.

May 02 - Saturday

Love your pet - a set of five stamps on the proper care of your pet in both souvenir sheet and booklet formats.



May 03 - Sunday
In Flanders Fields - a single stamp in a ten stamp booklet and a special five stamp mini-pane (similar to the "Wait for me, daddy" issue).

This stamp issuance was just announced within the past two days or so.



A stamp commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of John McCrae's death was issued on October 15, 1968.



He died on January 28th, 1918.

There is no relationship between the dates of his death or the issuance dates of the two commemorative stamps, so I fail to see why Canada Post would issue a stamp on a Sunday when all postal outlets are closed. This is the second instance lately of an unnecessary Sunday issuance.

In my opinion, if Canada Post can pre-print an OFDC with a Sunday date, can I not post-print my own FDC with the same date of May 3rd., and both are equally valid as being properly cancel dated? Yes, Canada Post's OFDC is the "official" one, but does that make it any more "legal"?

There is indeed a reason why the stamp is issued this week. It is the 100th anniversary of its writing. McCrae had been assigned in April to the Essex Farm Advanced Dressing Station just outside Ypres.



His friend Alexis Helmer was killed on May 2nd and McCrae is believed to have written the poem on that day or soon after.
