Is there any chance this stamp is original?

My first thought was, 'must be a fake because it is too nicely cancelled'. However, maybe someone in the forum with more expertise on these can help?

Granted, some originals can be nicely cancelled.

It appears to be a fake. The quality of the printing should be a lot better.

It appears to me like poor quality also. It lacks definition in the crown and shield. The outer frame line also.
My only hope was it might just be over inked or a worn plate.

Is this supposed to be the 1861 1/2 Groschen? I no absolutely nothing about Oldenburg stamps, but reading from the "Distinguishing Characteristics of Classic Stamps" for Old German States...

In the genuine 1861, "the 'N' in 'OLDENBURG' has no horizontal bar on the second vertical limb. Your stamp has one.

The other characteristics can't be seen with a photo of that poor quality.

The most common forgeries are covered by German Philatelic Society's (GPS) manuals on forgeries - which I have copies of, but am not able to access at this time. I am confident in the opinions given here that your stamp is a forgery, Stampcrow, but I can't tell you exactly which one you have (or even if yours has been documented).

I have a complete set of the GPS forgery manuals and this one isn't listed (unless I somehow missed it). I trust the judgment of PostmasterGS and others that this is a forgery, but I didn't see any forgeries listed in the GPS manuals for this one.

,I notice how thick your paper looks , so it would be my guess that your stamp is a Hialeah forgery and that would explain why it is not in the GPS forgery manuals .

ArtFulHinger,

The GPS manuals are very outdated. There are many forgeries not listed.
A good starting point for further research though.

Compare with these certified copies (MiNr 11 a at left, MiNr 11 b at right). Note the clarity in the text, especially.

WOW, it's great to have pictures to compare. Thanks to everyone that took the time to reply here.

This will be filed with my early Mexico fakes.
