Good guess, eligies. Jimjung is correct, the stamp is upside-down.
The corner symbols and the crowded script in the text indicate that it is Korean. It appears to be a 5w early Korean local(?) revenue. I don't collect revenues, but I've never seen this one. Neither is in the listings of Korean revenues that I've seen. I don't own a KSSC. If nobody chimes in with an ID, I would suggest you contact the Korean Stamp Society (US). It's not shown on their site, so they might be interested in seeing it. |

I will send to KSS and see what they can tell me. Thank you very much. Any other help would be appreciated. |

I've heard that they often don't respond or are very slow in responding. If you do get a reply, please let us know. Thank you!
If you don't mind, I might post your image on another board where I know there a couple of Korea collectors who can read Korean. |

Thanks, Hal. That explains the poor paper quality and printing. It's certainly very early North Korea, as it still has the Taeguk in the four corners. |

Most of the time, any stamps with the image of the "Taegok" (sp)as seen on the corners of this stamp, or Yin & Yang is from Korea.

In fact a Pyongyang Municipal revenue stamp. You can see the characters for Pyongyang - first and second characters at left in the (still inverted) bottom line. |

As Tony says this is a Pyongyang revenue. It's a five yen stamp issued around 1935. |

Thanks, guys! I had seen what I thought was the character for "city/district" in there, which is why I suspected it was a local revenue. I couldn't make out the name, which both Tony and Nigel have supplied. I now see the stamp identified as 1935 Pyongyang revenue on another website also. Well done! Here is that "other" image of the stamp: |

Just in case anyone is looking for the characters for Pyongyang (I gather they turn up on otherwise low value Japanese stamps) here they are, in two different fonts (Of course, just as with European languages, there are dozens of Chinese/Japanese fonts.) |
