I'm wondering, should I bother removing this faulty stamp to determine which grill it is?
Another thing... it isn't tied to the cover. Not sure how much value there is here, either way.
Any thoughts?

Leave it on, the grill shows well enough to determine which one it is. You could do a high resolution scan of just the grill area (say 1200DPI) so someone here could comment on whether it looks genuine. I'd also look inside the cover to see if the cover itself shows any trace of the grill, which would point toward it being fake.

May I ask why you say this? I've never heard that claim before. Would like to know wghy this would be the case?

Bill, I was hoping you would see this thread. Any thoughts on how or even if I should proceed with this?

If a fake grill were added to an on cover stamp I would expect the grill would also be impressed on the envelope. I would think that would be something standard to look for when the date of the cover is ambiguous and the grill is strong enough to be seen easily from the front.

Bill - I was also taught to check for traces of a grill on the inside of a suspect cover, as well as for anything on-piece, especially when a strong impression is noted on the stamp. While I do not own any examples, I was shown several such fakes. As it was explained to me, there were/are several embossers with fake grills and rather than remove stamps from covers they would simply emboss right on the cover. Certainly a dumb approach, but I have seen some really bad faked cancels, and some laughable faked covers!

stampcrow - I would leave the cover as is. I have not seen very many pen cancels like yours which actually tie the stamp, and while not a cancel, the smudge at UR sure appears to tie the stamp to the cover. I don't think that you have an issue there.

Billsey, I did check inside the cover for any grill type impressions. None can be seen... by me.

Kolectorkurt, good point about the smudge.

I should also mention, I don't have a scanner. I use a camera to take and post pictures here.

Shame that the pen cancel goes through the cheek on the right side, but am I seeing the star anyway, right in the middle of the pen cancel? If that's the case, you wouldn't need to see the grill because it would be the F grill #93 which is from Die #2 and the other grills do not have the star mark. At least I think that's the case....hope this helps..sorry in advance if I have this wrong....Ray

sdtom, you're right. Also find them at estate sales and auctions. It's on me, to take the time and make the effort.
You can bet, if I was looking to sell some items, I'd have a scanner set up right quick...lol
