Here are some covers on this topic...some quite odd/uncommon/unusual, including one with use of 3 different variants...apologies if i've already shared these, but I think not, as they are new to me

Wert,

Thank you -- I know I've been quiet for a while so I was thinking about sharing when I posted them...I've just acquired a whole bunch of old Newfie covers in my quest to have one of each variety, and will try to post them as I examine and scan them...meantime, if anyone wants to sell Newfie covers (pre 1935), then holler...

Cheers,

Great pic of the address, interesting angle to covers....might want to consider geo tracking all of them some day.

I take a shotgun approach to covers, including ebay (though its hit and miss), but also all the Canadian auction catalogs; about 30-40 websites I check constantly; trade shows every now and then; and individual relationships with other collectors (since I only spend money on Newfoundland, this becomes helps fund others expansion into other items).

Here is some more info for you on the one cover. I recognized the name and looked it up. Henry Hechler.

cool tangent. great sharing....I wonder if the letter to Hechler was "philatelically inspired" from 1897 though I think it unlikely because the date is well after the initial issue dates of the 3 stamps.

for those who care, those dates were :

1. Rose red on Nov 1, 1887
2. Orange red on January 1896
3. Black on November 1894

*the orange red had the smallest quantity issued

Also--further boring details for the Newfies : the last cover above appears to have both the black dog variety and also the less common "gray black" variety from 1898. See the vertical pair to the left...they appear to be darker black as compared to the four verticals to the right...
I'd welcome any granular - fly speck - color scan of these if anyone has the time and interest...

Note - there is a group in Nova Scotia that collects Henry Hechler covers and they would be able to shed some light on these covers. I haven't been in contact with them but might be worth tracking them down.

I have one other Hechler cover but I couldn't find the scan. I'll try and post later.

ah shucks Jenny...thank you but I am lucky...

if you search the Canada Post for my threads, you will find a bunch of covers posted...as Wert and a few others know...its all I do and I have many to post, I just don't want to overwhelm everyone with showing them off or boring everybody...

happy to respond to a request for a specific Newfie item too...
