Just a quick question as I was not able to find the answer online. Does anyone know if the stamp market for Chinese stamps (Republic of China, specifically) is about the same as it was a couple of years ago or have the values of the stamps declined? I have some that I'd like to sell - nothing too valuable, but am wondering how the Chinese stamp market is doing now - better or worse - than it has been.
Thanks in advance for any info!

I attended a live auction in Oslo last spring. The few Chinese items offered for sale were all relatively 'ordinary stuff', still all realized prices in the range of 5-10 times the asking price! And all items were bought by....Chinese. Obviously the asking prices (in 'normal' percentage-range of cat value) were far off the actual market price. Whether the market is increasing or not I cannot say, but for sure it seems the catalog values (Michel) were too conservative, so it seems to me the catalog publishers are 'behind' the market. (For matter of good sake I should mention that no other collection-areas experienced any similar popularity at the same auction) |

When things get this hot there are usually speculators driving the market at least to some degree. |

Thanks for your replies! I guess it's safe to say that the market for China stamps hasn't really diminished much! |

What's with that golden monkey stamp? It's worth a small fortune, but according to Wiki there were 5 million sold, so it's not considered rare. Why is it worth so much? |

I really don't know if it's true, but I've read that the monkey stamp is commonly used to bribe government officials in China. Gov't officials can't accept direct payments, of course, but "gifts" are supposedly acceptable, and a tiny piece of paper worth $1000 is easily concealed. Supposedly, if you really want to get something done in China, people in the know have a good idea of how many "monkeys" it will cost them to get the right officials to approve their requests. |
