Eldest son inherited Dad's collection of NASA canceled space envelopes, Apollo/Soyuz, Gemini, Viking, SkyLab, etc. and need to sell. Obviously I need advice about how to best market these originals and get a fair price. I have been contacted by a company that has auctions either to buy from me directly and they sell or take my chances with an auction price. I know enough about collectables that the market is seller beware and that items are only worth what someone will pay for them, having said that I need help in deciding how to proceed.

If may ask, just out of curiosity, how is that the auction company came to contact you? Did you contact it first? Whatever the answer, that may be a reasonable approach, though were you to share who the auction company is and where they sell their material, it might evoke some further comments.

From the two items you posted examples of, these appear to be "event" covers. While there are exceptions (I just paid $130 for a single scarce event cover), these are rarely worth more than a few dollars each. Sold in bulk, you might be lucky to get $1-$2 each. Auctioned off individually on ebay, some might not sell at all, while a few might bring in anywhere from $2-$10. These are generalizations made without the benefit of seeing what all you have, and with the caveat that while I collect FDC and event covers relating to aviation, I have no specific experience with space covers.

Basil, Thank you, at least now I have a name for them, "event covers." As to who contacted who, I think it was me 10-15 years ago and they have kept me on their mailing list. I also have moon dust with a great provence to go along with the covers. Again, thanks for the help.
