Robert, if anything I would call this stamp blue-green. That is because I do not see either yellow or olive in the picture!

My daughter has 20/20 vision. She is also color blind and can not distinguish between green and blue. Maybe you can find a known olive stamp next to it. Olive is yellowish somewhat, and it definitely has no yellow tint to it. Where is Tommy; he may have a color variant of this stamp?

I've got examples of all 3 and will scan and post them tonight or tomorrow.
These are very difficult to distinguish
Also--I don't believe it is Scott #8...
Too bad work gets in the way...

Tommy, if work gets in the way, get old and retire! That's whst I did, and except for the getting old part I enjoy it!
On a serious note, if it is not Scott 8, what do you think it is?

Tmmy, I am afraid you are at the moment doing your favorite thing: w.....g! But please show us the three different colors on Wert's green stamp, ( when you get home tonight ), whichever Scott number it is? I am curious to see if it is deep green ( my guess ), olive green or yellow green. Or maybe even blue green, if that is still one of the options.

Here are the versions of my mint stamps; a few comments (subjective and my viewpoints, apologies in advance):

1. These 4 color versions are very hard to distinguish and probably the best way is to have side by side comparison under bright light and good magnifying lenses or the like. Looking at one by itself and divining which would take a color expert.
2. I'm reasonably confident that these are accurate : 3 of them came from Eastern Auctions or Gary Lyon over the last 20 years and one predated the others.
3. The first stamp on the left is #44 and is deep or dark green and was issued in 1898
4. The second stamp from the left is #44a and is gray green and was issued in 1888
5. The next stamp over (to the right of #44a) is #45 and is just green; from November 1, 1887 (first issue of the bunch)
6. The far right stamp is #45a and is yellow green from 1896.
7. The values are all similar, so it almost doesnt matter except for really fussy people (like me).
8. If you look closely at the image (or for me in real life), I think it is subtle but clear that there are differences. The deep green looks darker. the next one has some gray in it. the next one is, well, not like the first two and just "green". and the far right pops in comparison with yellow in it.

Why the shades? Boggs' seminal book is sort of vague on this specific stamp, but does reference and relate many of the color changes during this time period to be tied to the British American Bank Note Company in Montreal, who used plates from the old American Bank Note Company, compounded by repeated reprint orders from the Newfoundland government during this decade.

Very good information Tommy...I took a colour reading from your stamps in the exact same area and mine also..I know monitors play games with colours, but this is as close as I can get..By your pictures, I would say mine is a Scott #44....Pretty sure of it..when looking at my stamp in hand, it almost..almost looks to have a gray tinge to it..But I will go with a #44..Of course my stamp is the insert in the middle of the picture.Of cThanks.

Probably right on--beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I also benefit from the swatch because even with the caveats you mention : the four swatches do appear or seem to be subtly different.

remind us again : how exactly do you take color readings? I have Adobe Photoshop for iMac and would love to figure out how to do this...

Thanks
