When we have those what-will-become-of-us chats, I like to think of analogies to other fields.
This morning, the chatter is about whether American Pharoah's victory in the Triple Crown will slow the decline of horse racing, eg, divert some of the ever-swelling river of cash that is flowing to casinos.
It occurs to me that, in the age of digital infotainment, horse racing vs casino gambling has a lot in common with stamp collecting vs, say, YouTube.
The slot machine or black jack table gives you an emotional 'hit' every few seconds; horse racing gives you a winner once every thirty minutes. Yawn.
You need to learn & know a lot to get much out of horse racing. If the fifty-two cards all had ever-changing histories, and the histories were relevant to the outcome, who would learn to play poker?
